How to Train Puppy to Be Alone at Home

3 Helpful Tips to prep your pup for solo time:

Step #1 Start with the "place" command. Guide your pup to their bed or crate with a leash, reward them with treats when they stay put, and gradually extend the time and distance between you. With a bit of patience, they'll adjust in no time!

Step #2 Before you leave home, help your dog relax. Depending on his energy level, take him for a walk or have a quick play session (a flirt pole works wonders!). Settle him in a quiet room with the windows covered and practice "place" for 15-30 mins. When you leave, keep it calm and brief, close the door to his room to reduce anxiety.

Step # 3 Gradually extend the time you're gone by running errands or grabbing lunch. If he gets anxious as you prepare to go, mix things up—grab your keys, but don't actually leave the house. Just like us, dogs experience FOMO. By teaching your pup that he's not missing out on anything when you're home, he should be less likely to worry when you're gone. Practice "place" a few times a day.

With consistency, your pup should start feeling comfortable being alone. If you'll be away for an extended period, consider scheduling a dog walk to ensure your furry friend gets the exercise, stimulation, and attention they deserve! They'll appreciate the chance to get out and explore, when you can't be there.
