  1. Outbreaks of Kennel Cough

Outbreaks of Kennel Cough

Outbreaks of Kennel Cough

The pet industry reported a record number of adoptions during the Covid quarantine. Unfortunately, there have been abnormal levels of "Kennel Cough," especially in boarding facilities, kennels, and pet hotels.

What is Kennel Cough?

Just as many different viruses cause human colds, Kennel Cough can also have multiple causes. Likewise, various microorganisms can cause this disease, along with many bacteria and viruses. Kennel Cough is infectious bronchitis that causes the trachea and bronchioles to become inflamed, resulting in a dry hacking cough. This cough can sometimes sound like your dog has something stuck in its throat.

Kennel Cough is Airborne.

One cough from an infected dog sends thousands of tiny droplets into the air, each one carrying millions of bacteria waiting to infect the next dog. Because the chances of spreading are higher in a dog kennel environment, this is where the name "Kennel Cough" originated. Since it is airborne, dogs can contract another dog's infected bacteria indoors and outdoors.

What Should Dog Parents Do?

As a pet owner, it is always best to educate yourself. For example, read up on Kennel Cough and contact your veterinarian with any concerns. If your dog exhibits any symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Most cases are mild and will clear up on their own with rest and hydration. However, in some cases, antibiotics may be required. Be extra diligent if visiting dog parks, kennels, the groomer, or taking your dog on a playdate. Please let The Peaks Pet Nanny know if your dog is exhibiting symptoms or has confirmed this disease. Otherwise, continue to enjoy your fur kids and everything that comes along with being a pet parent!
